The Art of Humane Living
It’s brave to author a book in today’s world, that professes to bring about peaceful living. It’s especially courageous if you happen to be a Black Belt Martial Artist. But, that’s exactly what Dr. Michael R. Foley has accomplished, and he has done a fine job of it. Teaching us the fight that leads to peace, the art of gentle power, and how to punch and kick and still be kind. Dr. Foley takes us on a journey of paradoxes that ultimately show us tangible accessible ways to create peace - within ourselves and outside ourselves with people we encounter everyday.
His focus is on our children, the leaders of tomorrow, and how important it is to ensure that they learn the power of love and respect - beginning with themselves. While he embraces the value of physical skills, Dr. Foley believes that these skills become more valuable when students learn to enhance their mental skills as well, creating a balance between the two. Without self-esteem and an expression of understanding toward other human beings, physical skills do nothing to help create a peaceful world. Without the ability to learn and live with mutual respect, our children are destined to suffer the same obstacles to peace that have plagued humankind for generations.
With captivating photos of children of all ages practicing their forms – both girls and boys - Dr. Foley opens the door to a fresh perspective on the martial arts. It is one that will intrigue you and make you wish that you were on of the children in the photos, just now stepping out into the world with the greatest weapon of all - your mind. Dr. Foley is a practicing Material Fetal Medicine Specialist and former Medical Director of Phoenix Perinatal and is currently Chief Medical Officer at Scottsdale Healthcare. He has been studying the martial arts for more than 40 years and holds a fifth degree black belt.

It is a not-for-profit organization that focuses on leading families to peace through the enlightened study of the martial arts. Winning the Battle
Feeding the Wolf
In ancient times, well-known teachers would often use the art of storytelling to teach valuable life lessons to their students. In one such instance, a Master gathered his students together to discuss "the battle" that goes on inside every human being.
The Master told the students that the battle is between two "wolves" that exist in all of us:
o The Evil Wolf. Its characteristics are envy, lies, greed, self- pity, inferiority, false pride, anger, jealousy, regret, arrogance, guilt, resentment, and excessive ego.
o The Good Wolf. It represents peace, empathy, love, hope, humility, kindness, generosity, truth, faith and compassion.
As the story concluded, an inquisitive student spoke up and asked, "Which wolf wins the battle?"
The wise Master replied, "The one you feed."
This legendary story has an important message for all of us. We need to focus diligently on feeding only the wolf we want to win the battle. Which wolves do you perceive to be the ones worthy of feeding?
“At some point in your life - from your past, present or future - a confrontation will present itself to you. Not a verbal joust, or a fight over a parking space, but more likely that not, there will be a situation where pure physical force will be asked of you, or brought to bear against you. Unfortunately, in this day in age, people are of the mind that an aggressive and victorious show of force is somehow good, or right. If you take the time to read this book, really read this book, I think you will find that the opposite is truer that we ever knew.”
“When you get down to it, that is really what this book is about, how you feel about yourself, and once you find this out, realizing how significantly it affects how you feel about and treat other people.”
“This book you now hold in your hands is, at its core, Dr. Mike Foley. It’s what he is, what he believes, what he wants for you, and all of it is good.”
“If you really read this book, your life and the lives of those you care about will change, and all of that change will be for the better. Thanks, Mike and God bless.”
